Design Series: Stand Out With Plastic Business Cards

For this month’s Design Series, Wes-Tex designer Don Barrett wanted to show how you can capitalize on foil and plastic stock for customers with a more serious, distinctive and professional brand.

Plastic Business Card with Foil Stamping

Don’s design for the fictitious “Growth Magazine” makes the most of contrast and dimensionality, two of the key benefits of working with foil on plastic stocks. Let’s look at what makes this card (and others like it) special:

  • Foil stamping provides bold, solid color that also has a reflective finish on plastic. Don played this up in his design by choosing a smoky plastic stock for an interesting contrast.

  • Foil often looks and literally feels three-dimensional when stamped on plastic. Don’s card capitalizes on this with faux-3D towers that seem to rise off the page, thanks to the two foil colors he incorporated and the angles found in the design. The strong vertical effect really brings the magazine’s “Growth” concept to life.

  • The contrast and dimensionality in this card changes in different lighting situations — indoor to outdoor, overhead, fluorescent, etc. This changeability is another unique quality of plastic business cards, which helps make them more eye-catching and memorable.

  • The translucency of the plastic stock itself adds to the uniqueness of the card. Similar to how lighting changes the design’s contrast and dimensionality, any colors or textures that are present behind the card add to its depth and visual interest. When you flip the card over, the transparent stock allows you to see the inverse of the design — another fun and interesting element, especially for those with symmetrical logos or other design elements.

Have you used foil and plastic in a unique way in your business? Seen any standout plastic business card designs lately? We’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
